The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism

Why is this training important?

After years of advocacy by Oliver McGowan’s family, the Health and Care Act 2022 now legally mandates that all registered health and social care providers ensure their staff receive training on learning disabilities and autism. This training must cover appropriate ways to engage with individuals who have a learning disability and autistic people, tailored to the staff member’s specific role.

The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training is the government’s preferred and recommended program for meeting this legal requirement. Co-developed by Skills for Care and Health Education England in collaboration with experts with lived experience of learning disabilities and autism, it is the only training that fully aligns with the Oliver McGowan draft code of practice on statutory learning disability and autism training. Employers who adopt this training can be confident that it meets national standards and is recognized by key advisory bodies in the sector.
